2023 Garden plans

I’m relatively new to homeownership and garden maintenance, meaning I’m learning as I go.

2023 will be my second year of gardening - the first was successful in the tomato crops, but I needed work (and organization) in other areas.

I have a few goals for this year’s garden:

  • Keep it organized! I created a visual guide for my seedlings with a timeline in hopes that this will keep me organized now and in the future.

  • Before transplanting, I will introduce the covered seedlings outdoors for about a week to acclimate to the weather. I didn’t do this for last year’s garden, I think it was detrimental for a few transplants.

  • Prepare stakes, cages, and trellises prior to transport. Last season, I did not prepare in time which made the tomato plants unstable and heavy.

  • Trimming! Don’t be afraid to trim off the bottom to help with the weight and growth.

  • Potting up from the original seedlings tray. I’ll be honest, I was completely unaware of this last year when I started my garden. This year I ordered 4” pots from Amazon for my cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers.

  • As a last-minute addition, I purchased these grow lights for my seedlings. I was noticing how my cucumbers and zucchini were reaching for the light. I’ve already noticed a difference in the growth from one week!

  • Grow with the garden. My biggest goal is to remind myself that I’m new to this process. Patience is a lesson in gardening.

It was such a pleasure to sink one’s hands into the warm earth, to feel at one’s fingertips the possibilities of the new season.
